The Construction Plant-Hire Association (CPA) has unveiled a new plant simulator designed to encourage young people to explore careers in construction.
Developed by Tenstar Simulation, the simulator provides hands-on experience operating a variety of machinery, including excavators, dumpers, telehandlers, and tower cranes, using realistic controls and 3D motion technology.
Housed in a custom-built trailer, the simulator can travel across the UK to schools, colleges, and careers events. Its aim is to give students a tangible sense of what working in the plant sector involves and to spark interest in long-term construction careers.
Highlighting career opportunities
CPA CEO Steve Mulholland said: “The construction plant sector offers stable, long-term employment, and it’s vital that young people are made aware of these opportunities before leaving school or college. Many aren’t familiar with plant operation or the career paths available unless they have a family connection to the industry.”
Engaging the next generation
Mulholland added that the simulator is a highly effective way to engage students. “It allows schoolchildren, college students, and others to immerse themselves in the experience of operating plant machinery — it’s the closest you can get to actually sitting in the cab.”
He highlighted a real-world success story: “One of the winners of the CPA Stars of the Future Awards 2025 discovered her passion for the sector after trying a plant simulator at a school careers event. This shows just how powerful these tools can be in attracting young talent to construction.”
